Feb. 5 Primary Election Guide (and more)

At the Los Angeles Greens meeting tonight, we affirmed the recommendations in the Green Party of Alameda's election guide. We also reached consensus on Los Angeles's local proposition.

Here are the recommendations:

California
91 - Transportation Funds: NO
92 - Community Colleges: YES
93 - Term Limits Change: NO
94-97 - Indian Gaming: NO

City of Los Angeles
Prop. S - Communication Users Tax: NO

Presidential
No Recommendation. Here are the candidates on the ballot in California:

Elaine Brown*
Jesse Johnson
Cynthia McKinney
Kent Mesplay
Ralph Nader~
Kat Swift

*Elaine Brown has withdrawn from the race.
~Ralph Nader has not yet announced whether he intends to seek the nomination.

Also at tonight's meeting, Erin Schmidt was re-elected Treasurer of the LA Greens, and Derek Iversen was elected co-facilitator. The positions of Secretary, Media Person and Co-Facilitator (female) are vacant.

Feb. 5 Calif. Primary Voter Guide

The Green Party voter guide (pdf) that Alameda County Greens produce each election year is up on their site. LA Greens suggest you take a look at it for recommendations on the statewide propositions.

Because the dates moved way up on the primary this year, which is a huge disadvantage to the non-corporate parties, LA Greens (All Volunteers) did not have a chance to put together our usual election committee over the holidays.

Next LA Greens Meeting - January 16

Join the Los Angeles Greens Jan. 16 at our first meeting of 2008, with election year in full swing. We will be holding elections for 4 of our internal offices: Female and Male Co-Facilitator (they run our meetings), Treasurer and Secretary.

We'll show some video of the Green Party Presidential Debate that takes place this weekend in San Francisco. Don't miss this historic debate!

Green Party Presidential Debate Jan. 13

`A Presidential Debate That Matters'

The debate will be held Sunday, January 13 at 2 p.m. at the Herbst Theater/Veterans
Memorial Building, 401 Van Ness Avenue, in San Francisco.

Six-time Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney, longtime consumer advocate Ralph Nader (an
undeclared candidate), university professor Jared Ball and environmental engineer Kent Mesplay will participate in "Campaign 2008: A Presidential Debate that Matters."

"Peace Mom" Cindy Sheehan – a former Democrat running for Congress against House
Speaker Nancy Pelsoi - will co-moderate the debate, with co-hosts San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, KPFA personality Aimee Allison and former President of SF Board of Supervisors Matt Gonzalez.

The debate will not be televised, but it is going to be videotaped and posted on the internet.
