Props 98 and 99 sound similar -- they both talk about eminent domain. But Prop 98 would also phase out rent control. That's one reason why a vast coalition, ranging from tenants' rights group Coalition for Economic Survival to Dianne Feinstein and Arnold Schwarzenegger oppose Prop 98, and support prop 99.

At the Los Angeles Greens meeting tonight, we affirmed the recommendations in the Green Party of Alameda's election guide. We also reached consensus on Los Angeles's local proposition.

The Green Party voter guide (pdf) that Alameda County Greens produce each election year is up on their site. LA Greens suggest you take a look at it for recommendations on the statewide propositions.

Because the dates moved way up on the primary this year, which is a huge disadvantage to the non-corporate parties, LA Greens (All Volunteers) did not have a chance to put together our usual election committee over the holidays.

`A Presidential Debate That Matters'

The debate will be held Sunday, January 13 at 2 p.m. at the Herbst Theater/Veterans
Memorial Building, 401 Van Ness Avenue, in San Francisco.

Six-time Democratic Rep. Cynthia McKinney, longtime consumer advocate Ralph Nader (an
undeclared candidate), university professor Jared Ball and environmental engineer Kent Mesplay will participate in "Campaign 2008: A Presidential Debate that Matters."

"Peace Mom" Cindy Sheehan – a former Democrat running for Congress against House
Speaker Nancy Pelsoi - will co-moderate the debate, with co-hosts San Francisco Supervisor Ross Mirkarimi, KPFA personality Aimee Allison and former President of SF Board of Supervisors Matt Gonzalez.

The debate will not be televised, but it is going to be videotaped and posted on the internet.

LA Greens Holiday Potluck on Dec. 19!

Please join us for our annual December pot-luck on Wednesday, December 19 at 7pm. The party this year will feature a visit from Green Party Presidential candidate Jared Ball.

Jared Ball is a member of the DC Statehood/Green Party, an assistant professor of communications studies at Morgan State University in Baltimore, MD., an independent journalist, a radio host with WPFW 89.3 FM in Pacifica Radio Washington, DC and founder of FreeMix Radio: The Original Mixtape Radio Show – a freely distributed monthly hip-hop mixtape dedicated to the practice of emancipatory journalism.

We'll also have a caricature artist and music. The party is free, but attendees are encouraged to bring a vegetarian dish to share and your own reusable plate/silverware.

The party, like our monthly meetings, will be held at the Peace Center, 8124 W. Third St., Los Angeles, CA 90048. Children are welcome. Parking is available behind the building.

LA Greens Participate in NAACP Calif. Convention Youth Forum

Los Angeles Greens member Raam Kaur represented the Green Party at the NAACP State Convention, Youth Forum, on Oct. 27, 2007 in Manhattan Beach, CA. The Republican youth was a no show, so Raam had the stage with a Democrat, speaking to over 100 youth from across the state. She covered the key points of our Green Party platform: highlighting our freedom from corporate donations, the Green Party's worldwide presence, justice issues, fair trade, the consequences of our purchases and personal responsibility, global connectedness, sustainable agriculture, how the money that's going to the Iraq War could be better spent on education and health care, and how we need to consider the seventh generation in our deliberations.

Last week, Raam was on the hip-hop station Power106, on the program Knowledge is Power, discussing politics and youth involvement with reps from USC Republicans, CA Democratic Party, SFV young democrats and ADI, who were promoting a big event, the Empower Change Summit, at UCLA on Nov. 3.

A Sustainable Water Future for CA

On October 17, the Los Angeles Greens will host guest speaker Dorothy Green, founder of Heal the Bay. Recently, she launched the California Water Impact Network (CWIN), whose goal is to move our state toward a sustainable water future.

Our water resources are over-committed. But if we learn to use the water we have more efficiently, there will be plenty of water in our state to meet all our needs. We can restore the San Francisco Bay Delta, the San Joaquin River, and lost habitats for our endangered species as well.

This is the message contained in Dorothy Green's book, Managing Water: Avoiding Crisis in California, published by UCPress.

All are invited to attend and hear Ms. Green speak on this vital subject, and learn how to affect sustainable water solutions in our state.

Dorothy Green is the Founding President of Heal the Bay. She was also the founding President and now President Emeritus of the Los Angeles & San Gabriel Rivers Watershed Council. As a board member of POWER, Public Officials for Water and Environmental Reform, she chairs the most important water policy conference in the state, the California Water Policy Conference, now in its 16h year.

She also serves as the Los Angeles Regional Vice President of the Planning and Conservation League (PCL), which provides lobbying services in Sacramento to both individuals and to organizations without sufficient resources to hire their own lobbyist, and is Secretary of the only non-profit that is devoted solely to statewide water supply issues, the California Water Impact Network (CWIN). This organization has developed the Principles needed for a Sustainable Water Future and is organizing the state around these principles. She also served for 3 ½ years as a Los Angeles City Department of Water and Power Commissioner.

Big Green Weekend

Brezenoff Breaks 5 Percent in Congressional Run-Off

Green Party congressional candidate Daniel Brezenoff got 5.4 percent in Tuesday's run-off. As expected, Democrat Laura Richardson won the election, amid very low voter turnout.

The runoff in the special election for Congress in the 37th district is this Tuesday. The Green Party candidate is Daniel Brezenoff.

From Brezenoff's website:

Daniel Brezenoff has been active in the civil rights, labor, environmental, and peace movements literally since the age of ten. Raised in a family of civil rights, labor, and anti-war activists, he has organized, marched, spoken out publicly and published essays in newspapers about issues of justice, integrity and nonviolence in government and society. He was the founder of Long Beach Citizens for Peace and a principal organizer for Howard Dean’s presidential campaign. Daniel has worked on several national and local political campaigns for progressive Democratic, left-Libertarian and Green candidates.

As a clinical social worker, Daniel has worked closely with some of the most challenging populations in the mental health field, including men and women struggling with addiction, young adults leaving the juvenile incarceration system, and children who have been severely abused. Daniel has facilitated healing, understanding, and solutions with groups and families dealing with violence, trauma, and poverty. He has also been an advocate on the macro level for people with mental illness, especially veterans and women fleeing violence.

Daniel was selected by mental health professionals to serve on the North Carolina Governor’s Crime Commission committee on domestic violence from 1999-2001.

As a historian and journalist, Daniel has given his time and energy to the cause of truth in media and government, tirelessly challenging the myths created to support the status quo by researching and publishing accurate information for the public on the Internet and in periodicals.

Daniel was active in helping to pass the federal Clean Air Acts and in advocating for full disclosure in food and drug labeling in the 1990’s. He helped organize the successful nationwide drives on college campuses to encourage fair trade and labor practices by merchandisers.

Daniel has never held public office, but the dire situation in Washington, and the request of local Greens that he run, caused him to feel that the time is now to take his public service to a new level.

Friday: LA City Hall Citizen's Impeachment Presence

The Los Angeles National Impeachment Center (LANIC) is organizing a "Citizen's Impeachment Presence" at LA City Hall tomorrow.

LANIC, which is supported by the Los Angeles Greens, has been lobbying the City Council to pass a resolution calling for impeachment of President Bush and Vice President Cheney. Several Council members have already voiced support for the resolution to LANIC.

City Hall is located at 200 N. Spring St. (The group is meeting by Main Street entrance @ 9:30 am).

From UCLA Parking Lot 9, walk out to and across Charles Young Jr. Drive South, (note the School of Public Health sign on the wall), veer slightly left, go up the stairs, go past the fountain, open the door, go straight ahead, and veer slightly left to the elevator (Elevator E). Go by elevator to the 6th floor. At the 6th floor, consult the map as you come out of the elevator. Then turn right along Corridor 6, and then turn left at the next corridor (3rd corridor), continue walking along that corridor to Room 105 where Corridors 2 and 3 meet. If you pass Corridor 2 you have gone too far.

From the Center For Health Sciences Parking lot, follow signs for the hospital entrance. At the hospital information desk, walk along Corridor 7 to your right to Corridor 2. Rally for Health Care on Aug. 11

Independence Day Kick-off for Impeachment Center

The Los Angeles Impeachment Center officially opened the morning of July 4th with a ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Peace Center and a picnic at La Cienega Park.

An array of over 200 activists and revelers gathered at the park to gather information, listen to speakers, and support investigations into the misdeeds of the Executive Branch. Among the groups represented, in addition to the Los Angeles Greens: Westside Greens, San Fernando Valley Greens, Progressive Democrats of America, 9/11 Truth Now, Code Pink, and many more. Petitions, voter registration forms, bumper stickers, and lawn signs were among the many items in evidence.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters, a co-sponsor of Articles of Impeachment against Dick Cheney, spoke first, thanking the crowd for their involvement in "one of the most important movements" in the nation's history, and leading the crowd in a chant of "Impeach Cheney Now!" Other speakers included Former Assemblymembers Jackie Goldberg and Paul Koretz, Executive Director of the Islamic Shura Council of Southern California Shakeel Syed, and Green Congressional Candidate Byron De Lear.

The Impeachment Center will be open Saturdays 2-6pm.

L.A. Impeachment Center Picnic on July 4

What: July 4th Picnic at La Cienega Park to celebrate the Inauguration of the Los Angeles Impeachment Center

Why: To Urge Los Angeles City Council, Santa Monica City Council and CA State Congressional and Assembly Representatives to Pass a Resolution Calling for the Impeachment of President Bush and Vice-President Cheney

When: July 4th from Noon to 3 pm (It's early in the day, so you won't have to miss any other celebrations.)

Where: Olympic & La Cienega, (8400 Gregory Way in Beverly Hills) park at tennis courts lot (Bring blankets, there are very few tables)

Speakers and Entertainment: Congresswoman Maxine Waters will speak at both the inauguration ceremony and the picnic from 12 to 3 pm. There will be music at various times at the picnic including music and entertainment from Eva James (songs around 1pm), musician Steven Fine, and special guest Marcy Vaj and the Regime-Change Band. Other speakers include Paul Koretz, Byron De Lear, Anthony St. Martin, Larry Everest, Shakeel Syed, and Jackie Goldberg.

Also: At 11 AM, Congresswoman Maxine Waters will speak at a 30 minute Ceremonial Inauguration for the Impeachment (Peace) Center, along with Byron De Lear, former Green Party Candidate for Congress in the San Fernando Valley and cofounder of Global Peace Solution; and Peter Thottam, progressive attorney active with Interfaith Communities United for Justice and Peace (ICUJP) and former Green Party candidate for CA Assembly.
