Meet Green Gov. Candidate Deacon Alexander at the LA Greens Meeting

At the LA Greens meeting this Wednesday, January 20 (7pm), we'll have a Q & A with Deacon Alexander. Alexander, a candidate for governor of California, is one of two Green Party candidates who have announced their intention to run for the position. Laura Wells is also collecting signatures to be in the primary, which will take place on June 8.

You'll also have a chance to meet 2010 Assembly candidates at the meeting.

The meeting begins at 7pm, and Deacon Alexander is scheduled to speak at 8pm.

Internal election time: we will have LA Greens' elections for 2 co-facilitators--gender balanced: a man and a woman to run the meetings-- and Treasurer and Secretary. (Half of our steering committee positions are elected in Jan. and half in July). Please run for office!

DESIGN!!!
Those present will design the new LA Green Party shirt! Lisa Green will print them (after she collects all the signatures to get on the ballot!). The cost to make the shirt is $7 a shirt for organic cotton (covering costs only) or $9 a shirt for hemp.

OUTREACH!!
What ways can we increase our visibility? Single Payer Healthcare events, Marriage Equality events, Environmental protection events, animal rights events, etc? Join in this discussion and let's get our Green Party name more visible again within the community. VOLUNTEER!!!!!
Lisa Green, our Assembly Candidate in the 53rd District, will give a campaign update and ask for volunteers to make calls following up with Green Party voters that she has already left campaign info with, etc. Only an hour or two a week of your time would be greatly appreciated.

Our member Linda Piera-Avila was recently appointed to the newly formed Santa Monica Urban Forest Task Force. Yay Linda-- all your hard work running for Santa Monica City Council last year paid off with visibility and clout!! German Green Party member Birgit Czerny, a physician in Frankfurt, Germany, will be our guest. We look forward to meeting her and hearing Green Party news from Europe.

Is Single Payer Universal Healthcare the only REAL healthcare reform?

This Wednesday, Sept. 16, Susie Baldwin of the Physicians for a National Healthcare Program, a 20 year champion for Single Payer Universal Healthcare, will debate the topic at the LA Greens meeting.

The program will include details on Single Payer, the difference between it and the Public Option, SB810-State of California's Single Payer Universal Healthcare Senate Bill, a short film from Healthcare for All, plus more.

What: L.A. Greens Summer Solstice Hike: "Welcome to Rivendell"
Where: Solstice Canyon, Malibu (a unit in the Santa Monica Mountains National Recreation Area) directions/map
Why: Instead of our monthly June meeting, please join the L.A. Greens for a Summer Solstice hike at Solstice Canyon in Malibu!

Enter park off Corral Canyon Road and gather in the main parking lot, (see directions below).
Bring a sack lunch and an optional reading to share about the solstice or nature.
Since parking is limited, *please* try to arrange carpools.

About the hike: "Welcome to Rivendell"

For those of you not versed in Tolkien or Lord of the Rings lore, Rivendell is the magical home of the elves. Solstice Canyon reminds me of what our local version of Rivendell might be like! Watch for elves and hobbits to pop out from behind the trees at any time! (Of course, I'm still waiting for Prince Aragorn!) What better way to celebrate the Summer Solstice than to revel in nature and invoke the Elves of Rivendell!

We will head up to the enchanted Tropical Terrace along the canyon floor, for an easy 1.1 mile hike each way. Minimal elevation gain, lots of shade and a year round stream. In true hobbit fashion, we will go slowly and look at nature around us. I will bring my plant and bird identification books if people want to know more about what we might see. Upon arrival at Tropical Terrace, we will rest, snack and look at the mini waterfalls.

Bring a hat, sunscreen, bug repellent, good hiking shoes, lots of water, binoculars and cameras if you like and a cloak if you have one (just kidding about the cloak!). Also bring a sack lunch to leave in your cooler in the car to eat afterwards.

Optional: bring a reading about the solstice or nature in general to share with others during or after lunch. Tolkien would be proud! I will also bring my Lord of the Rings board game if any die hards want to hang out longer and play.

Friendly dogs on leash ok. Clean pit toilets, no sinks for handwashing. Like Gollum, cell phone service is unpredictable.

Directions:

From the Westside, take the I-10 freeway west until it becomes Pacific Coast
Highway (PCH).
Continue north on PCH to Malibu Canyon Road.
At Malibu Canyon Road and PCH, continue north on PCH, but start your odomenter.
2.3 miles north of Malibu Canyon Road, turn right onto Corral Canyon Road.
(There will be a Union 76 station on the northwest corner.)
Go 0.1 mile and turn left into Solstice Canyon.
Go slowly for 0.2 miles on the narrow park road until you come to the main parking area.
We will meet in the amphitheater.

If coming from the Valley, check for road closures as I saw a sign recently that said that Malibu Canyon Road was to be closed that day from 8-4. You may want to take Topanga Canyon Road over to Pacific Coast Highway and then follow the above directions.

Note:
Please try to carpool as the parking lot at Solstice is small. Another option is as follows: At the intersection of PCH and Malibu Canyon Road, there is the Malibu Bluffs Park, with a large parking lot. Consider consolidating cars trips to Solstice by meeting there and then just taking one car from your group to Solstice Canyon.

"Water Justice and Preparing for Peak Water" -- Wed., April 15, 2009 7PM

For Earth Day 2009, the Los Angeles Greens will host a panel of speakers discussing important and timely water issues in California.

Our two guest speakers are Rev. Hannah Petrie and Conner Everts.

The Rev. Hannah Petrie will speak on water justice issues. She is associate minister at Neighborhood Unitarian Universalist Church in Pasadena, CA. She also serves on a state-wide UU water issues team.

Conner Everts is the executive director of the Southern California Watershed Alliance and co-chair of the Desal Response Group. He is chair of Public Officials for Water and Environmental Reform (POWER) with its annual water policy conference and on the Board of Water for California, as well as other organizations. Conner was elected to the Casitas Municipal Water District and president of the Ojai Basin Management Ground Water Agency. His most important work is as elder advisor to the Environmental Justice for Water and with the Southern California Steelhead Coalition helping remove dams on the streams where he caught fish as a youth and hopefully others can in the future.

On Wednesday, March 18, the Los Angeles Greens are proud to welcome Josh Tickell, director of the hit new film, Fuel.

If you haven’t heard about Fuel yet, you will. As the film’s website, www.thefuelfilm.com says, “Fuel is a vital, superbly assembled documentary that presents an insightful overview of America's troubled relationship with oil and how alternative and sustainable energies can reduce our country's--and the world's--addictive dependence on fossil fuels.”

Winner of the 2008 Sundance Audience Award winning documentary film, Fuel is garnering a lot of praise and buzz. With glowing reviews from the L.A. Times, The Seattle Post-Intelligencer and MTV Movies, just to name a few; and a recent appearance with Jay Leno on The Tonight Show; Josh is riding a wave of excitement about our energy future that his film insightfully explores.

In addition to being a filmmaker, Josh Tickell is also an activist and author. His latest book is Biodiesel America – How To Achieve Energy Security, Free America From Middle- East Oil Dependence and Make Money Growing Fuel. The book offers a complete energy roadmap to wean the United States from fossil fuels. Copies of the book will be available for signing at the event.

Election notes

The Los Angeles Greens are not making endorsements for the March 3 election.

We debated Measure B, the proposal to put solar panels on LA City buildings, at our Februrary meeting, but the measure had enough problems that we were deadlocked on whether to endorse it. We like the idea of putting solar panels on LA's public buildings, but we don't like the closed process or centralized nature of this proposal. The proposal also lacks crucial details such as how much it will cost. We hope that whether the measure passes or fails, the City Council will work to encourage decentralized adoptation of solar in Los Angeles.

Also, Alex Walker has withdrawn his candidacy for State Senate (the primary in this special election is set for March 24).

LA Greens Health Care Event - Feb 18 @ 7pm

In 2008, the census reported that more than 45 million Americans lacked health insurance. With the economy continuing to worsen and unemployment rising quickly, that number is likely to be significantly higher this year. Universal access to affordable, high quality health care has never been more important.

The national Green Party platform states, "Health care is a human right, not a privilege," and calls for Canadian-style single-payer universal health care. Greens believe single-payer systems are the best way to guarantee this human right.

In his campaign, Barack Obama promised to pass health care reform that will "provide affordable, accessible health care to all." The president's plan relies on new options and regulations, but individuals and businesses will continue to buy their own health care insurance.

With his election, the United States is as close to passing health care reform as it has been in a decade. But is President Obama's plan the right way forward? On Wednesday, February 18, the LA Greens will debate President Obama's health care plan.

Solar Energy for Los Angeles
The LA Greens will also discuss Measure B, the controversial solar energy initiative that will be on the ballot in Los Angeles on March 3.

LA Greens Endorse Boycott of Forever21

The Forever21 corporation wants to construct a facility on the South Central Farm and continue to contract factories that regularly violate labor laws. In solidarity with the South Central Farmers and the Never Forever21 coalition, the LA Greens endorse the No More Warehouses rally on Saturday, February 21 in Pasadena. Our LA Greens' member, Alex Walker, is running for State Senate in a special election. The primary will be held March 24!

The Special Primary Election on March 24, 2009 is being held for the purpose of electing party candidates for the Special Runoff Election on May 19, 2009 which will be held to fill a vacancy for the unexpired term ending December 1, 2010, in the 26th State Senate District resulting from the resignation of office by Mark Ridley-Thomas.
